7-Day Silent Retreat

Zmar, Portugal

This event has ended. Watch the recordings on Mooji TV Watch

This residential 7-day Silent Retreat with Mooji is a potent opportunity to immerse yourself completely in the energy field of Satsang in the presence of a great spiritual Master. The setting and services offered at the Zmar retreat centre in southern Portugal inspire and support this genuine introspection and contemplation by allowing you to fully turn your attention inwards without the usual daily demands and distractions.

Mooji introduces the direct path to freedom through self-inquiry and the Invitation, which is proving to be one of the most effective aids for true and lasting Self-discovery. Satsang takes place twice each day and in this auspicious time Mooji guides, challenges and responds to questions with wisdom, love, humour and searing honesty. This powerful communication underpins the silence that is maintained throughout the 7 days. The quietude takes you deeper into what is being pointed and is an essential part of the retreat.

Through Mooji’s presence and direct pointings to Truth, the unfading love, joy and peace that so many are searching for are revealed to be our very nature and Self. Participating in a Silent Retreat with Mooji is a compelling invitation to all who are called to discovering this timeless Truth. Welcome!

Nothing in existence can overcome you
when you know who you truly are.
This discovery begins unfolding
as your mind enters your heart.
Satsang is the discovering space.
Welcome to Satsang.

~ Mooji

This Silent Retreat with Mooji is for those who are genuinely drawn to Self-discovery. This environment is not for the merely curious, but for those with a sincere and wholehearted commitment to Self-discovery. It is essential that those who intend to join this Retreat watch these important videos: An Invitation to Freedom and A Simple and Profound Introduction to Self-Inquiry.

Each participant is required to abide by the following guidelines which are in place to facilitate your awakening.  By attending this event you agree to:

  • Approach the retreat with the understanding that it is not a casual event—it is for those earnestly seeking Self-realisation in this life.
  • Complete the entire retreat and to attend each and every Satsang session without exception. Remain inside the Satsang Hall until Moojibaba has left the room. This is out of respect for what he is offering to all of us.
  • Respect and abide by the code of silence for the full duration of the retreat.
  • Move quietly with your attention resting in silent awareness. There is strictly no socialising, no physical or eye contact, talking, singing, dancing, reading, writing or use of phones, cameras, other mobile devices, or the internet during the retreat. This ensures that the attention is not pulled outward but remains in the heart’s energy field. In this way, you make the most of your opportunity and also honour the retreat of other participants.
  • Not communicate in any way during the retreat with your partner or friend if you are attending together. Please respect the Satsang of your loved ones and other retreat participants.
  • Present questions to Mooji in a simple, open and honest way. Avoid sharing personal stories, but come as though this is your only opportunity for freedom. Please understand and respect that it is only during Satsang that Mooji invites questions—he will not receive questions afterwards.
  • Refrain from using intoxicants or recreational drugs for the duration of this Retreat.
  • Wear modest clothing throughout the Retreat, avoiding tight, revealing or transparent clothes.
  • Note that Silent Retreats are not a replacement for any therapy or other medical treatment or diagnosis. If you are currently receiving or have previously received any medical treatment or therapy for issues related to mental health, this Retreat may not be suitable for you. Therefore, for those with a history of serious mental health conditions, it is not advisable to attend this Retreat without ensuring it is reasonably safe to do so. Please check with a specialist healthcare practitioner whether attending the Retreat is suitable for you at this time. More information can be found here.
  • Have your image and voice recorded and possibly used for the sharing of Satsang on DVD, mp3 and on the Internet. All recorded material will be used to serve satsang only. Images of all individuals will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and respect.

Our home for the retreat is Zmar Eco Experience. Situated on 81 hectares of land near Odemira on the Alentejo coast of western Portugal, it is fully equipped with modern lodging and is known for its ecological awareness. The beautiful Zmar team support our silence while full-heartedly taking care of our daily needs.

Live Translation in Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian is available both at the event and for the online participants, and is lovingly offered by a team of devoted, non-professional interpreters.  It is very helpful for some participants to listen to Satsang in their native language, however please be aware that there is always the possibility that some of Mooji’s words or meaning is missing or not translated perfectly. Naturally, Mooji’s own, unfiltered words are the highest and most powerful transmission, but many have benefitted deeply from listening to the live translation.

Please note that live translation is offered only for Satsang. All other communication and written information, such as the schedule, registration, travelling and so forth, will be available only in English.

Requirements:  Smartphone or tablet  Compatible headphones  Installation of VLC player App for Android or iOS.  Please ensure you tick the appropriate box when you register to request translation into Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish or Russian and you will receive information about the translation service by email.

Ways to Join

There are two ways to participate in the Silent Retreat. You can come to Zmar to be in Mooji’s physical presence, or you can join the live Internet broadcast through Mooji.tv.

Attending physically at Zmar
Being in the physical presence of a living Master and fully immersing yourself in the energy field of Satsang is a rare and blessed opportunity. Mooji’s loving and unfathomable presence itself can trigger transformation in one who is ripe for awakening. Please be aware that places are limited so registering in advance is essential. Pricing and registration info is below.

Watching online via live Internet broadcast
If you are unable to attend physically at Zmar, joining via live Internet broadcast is an excellent alternative. You will have access to the daily Satsangs in real-time, as well as to any additional scheduled events such as Bhajans. For Mooji there is no separation, no distance to those joining online and he sees absolutely no hindrance or disadvantage to your awakening in attending in this way. Registration is via Mooji.tv and more information can be found here.

Regardless whether you attend in-person or online, a Silent Retreat is more than just the scheduled events, and it is essential to follow the Guidelines. This may be more of a challenge for those following online who may still need to engage in some daily activities. If this is the case, it is highly recommended that you arrange plenty of quiet, contemplative time and space for yourself. The time you spend prior to and after Satsang is of utmost importance to allow the pointings to settle deeply inside your heart.

Registration opens on 14 February at 15:00 (3pm) Lisbon time (WET).

What is the schedule?

On the Opening Day there will be a Welcome & Orientation meeting starting at 20:30.

What is the difference between a Silent Retreat and a Satsang Intensive?

Silent Retreat is a residential retreat of 7 days with participants eating, sleeping and attending Satsang on site. Silence is maintained throughout the duration of the retreat. Daily activities such as work, reading, dancing, writing etc. are suspended to focus the attention inward. In the shorter Satsang Intensives, participants arrange their own food and accommodation. Silence is maintained in and around the Satsang venue and is recommended for the duration of the Intensive, but there is the possibility to continue with daily activities if needed.

  • E-checks on Paypal are not accepted therefore make sure you have enough money in your Paypal account.
  • Refresh the page, or try a different web browser.

What if I can’t catch the trains you advise in the ‘Trains for Zmar’ section above?

Faro: If you are unable to catch the Faro train, another option is to come by taxi or rent a car. There is also a later train at 17:56 arriving at 18:59 (at Santa Clara-Saboia). From there you would need to take a taxi to Zmar. In this case you need to arrange a taxi to pick you up beforehand, as there are no taxis waiting at the train station.

Lisbon: If you are unable to catch either of the two Lisbon trains mentioned, we advise that you book a public bus straight to Odemira leaving at 15:00 (3pm) so you will still arrive on time. From Odemira you can take a taxi to Zmar. Bus information is available below.

If you arrive on another train you need to get off at Funcheira or Santa Clara-Saboia and take a taxi to Zmar. There are no taxis waiting at these stations so you would need to arrange a taxi beforehand (see taxi info below).

Public Bus to Zmar (Rede Expressos)  Faro: there are no public buses to Odemira.  Lisbon: You can take a bus from Lisbon (Sete Rios) to Odemira. A one-way ticket costs approximately €16. Buses leave at 15:00.  You can buy an online ticket on the Rede Expressos website or at the bus station.  Bus station in Lisbon: Terminal Rodoviário de Sete Rios (Taxi from airport is around €10-13). From Odemira to Zmar you will have to take a taxi.

Car Rental Information

My plane arrival times don’t match with the departure times of the train from Lisbon or Faro, so I decided to rent a car. Can you recommend somewhere where I can offer to share a ride?

You can use this Facebook page to connect with others to travel together.

Please note that Zmar cannot receive participants after 20:00.

What is Satsang, self-inquiry, and the Invitation?

It is simple, direct and profound. Satsang literally means ‘association with the highest Truth’ and also refers to a gathering of people, often in the presence of a teacher or master, who are searching for the highest Truth. Satsang in the form of the Invitation and self-inquiry is a powerful aid to Self-realisation.

Who will benefit most from being in Satsang?

Satsang benefits those who are longing for Self-discovery and in whom the urge to be free is alive and compelling. It is for earnest and sincere seekers of Truth.

The Retreat

Why is the retreat silent?

All retreats with Mooji are conducted in silence. The maintaining of silence throughout the seven days supports your immersion in the Truth by keeping the attention focused inward.

Can I read or write during the retreat?

No. We ask you to please refrain from reading, writing, using the internet, drawing, singing or any form of the expressive arts. In other words, drop all outer activities for the duration of the retreat. Mooji encourages you to turn your attention inward and make use of the opportunity not to be distracted by any habitual activity. Books written by Mooji and any other books offered in the Sangha Shop are an exception, because they serve the same purpose as the retreat: to immerse you in the energy field of Truth.

Physical Conditions

I read that some of the accommodations at Zmar are far from the Satsang hall. How far is my accommodation from toilet facilities, Satsang space or dinin

The terrain at Zmar is flat, but some of the rooms are a 10-15 minute walk from the Satsang Hall and dining area, depending on the type of accommodation. Zmar offers bicycles for rent.

I can’t sit on the floor. Can I sit on a chair?

Zmar has plenty of chairs with back support available.

Do you provide cushions to sit on the floor?

No, we advise to bring your own cushion if you wish to sit on the floor.

Physical and Mental Well-Being

Is Satsang a form of therapy or a replacement for medical treatment?

It is important to understand that Satsang is not a replacement for any therapy or other medical treatment or diagnosis. Satsang in the form of the Invitation and self-inquiry is a powerful aid to self-realisation, and while Mooji’s teachings are profound in guiding seekers of Truth to ultimate awakening, they are not meant as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Any change or discontinuation of therapeutic, psychological, psychiatric or other medical treatment should be undertaken with the supervision and guidance of a medical or other specialist mental health clinician.

Are you able to provide support for those who are not able to move independently, for example, due to physical disability or age?

No, unfortunately we are not able to provide such support at present.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Is this Silent Retreat suitable for those with mental health or psychiatric disorders?

If you are currently receiving or have previously received any medical treatment or therapy for issues related to mental health, Silent Retreats may not be suitable for you. Please check with a medical or other mental health clinician whether attending a Retreat, or participating online, is suitable for you at this time.

When might attending a Silent Retreat not be advisable?

Those experiencing psychiatric conditions, or other unusually strong emotional upheavals might not benefit from a Silent Retreat, and occasionally, it could adversely affect pre-existing conditions. The questionnaire below may help you decide whether you are in a position to benefit fully from a Silent Retreat.

Please note that this is intended as a guide only, and does not constitute or replace medical or psychiatric advice. If the answer to any of the questions is ‘yes’ please be aware that a Silent Retreat may not be appropriate for you at this time.

  • Have you ever or are you currently suffering from and/or receiving treatment for any of the following conditions: Anxiety disorders (which includes generalised anxiety, agoraphobia and panic disorder), mood disorders (which includes clinical depression, mania and bipolar disorder), obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), personality disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis (on its own or as part of another condition)?
  • Are you currently taking any prescribed or non-prescribed medication for the treatment of a mental health condition?
  • Have you used any psychotropic (mind altering) non-prescription drugs for recreational, spiritual or self-medicating purposes within the past 6 months?
  • Do you currently have any substance use disorders (this includes harmful use, dependence and addiction) or have you undertaken a detoxification from substance use within the past 12 months?
  • Have you experienced any aggravation or deterioration of your mental health during the past 12 months irrespective of whether you have sought specialist advice for it or not?
  • Have you ever experienced any unpleasant or unwanted effects (these can include physical, cognitive, emotional or ‘energetic’) that have persisted beyond the duration of your participation in a spiritual practice or retreat, which may have interfered in your wellbeing and/or functional abilities?

Answering ‘yes’ to any of the questions does not categorically mean you cannot attend a Silent Retreat program. It requires you to seek specialist advice and receive confirmation from a medical or other professionally registered clinical specialist that your attendance is unlikely to adversely affect your health condition. Please be aware that we are not able to provide medical or psychiatric support or expertise.

I have been advised not to attend, or can see from the questionnaire that this is not the right time for me to participate. Does this mean Satsang is not for me?

Being in Satsang with Mooji does not mean that you have to be physically present or attend a retreat or intensive. Satsang works in many subtle ways. Experiencing a mental health or psychiatric condition is not something that excludes anyone from deepening in their Satsang or fully realising their true nature. However, proper medical guidance and treatment as necessary is still very important. The two can support each other.

Can Satsang be a cause of mental health imbalance?

Satsang does not cause mental health or psychiatric disorders. Occasionally, Satsang may bring up latent traumatic imprints or deep-rooted tendencies in the body-mind, which can trigger strong, seemingly overwhelming, thoughts and emotional responses. Satsang offers an opportunity to recognise, release and transcend these states. However, if there is a mental health condition, a participant may feel overwhelmed by the arising of their own hidden tendencies, and feel unable to control these projections or energies, and so additional medical and psychiatric support may be required. Please refer to the questionnaire above for more information.
For any queries you may contact events@mooji.org.
