7-day Silent Retreat ~ Zmar

Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Nothing in existence can overcome you when you know who you truly are. This discovery begins unfolding as your mind enters your heart. Satsang is the discovering space. Welcome to Satsang. ~ Mooji

About

This residential 7-day Silent Retreat with Mooji is a potent opportunity to immerse yourself completely in the energy field of Satsang in the presence of a great spiritual Master. The setting and services offered at the Zmar retreat centre in southern Portugal inspire and support this genuine introspection by allowing you to turn your attention inwards without the usual daily demands and distractions.

Mooji introduces the direct path to freedom through self-inquiry and the Invitation, which is proving to be one of the most effective aids for true and lasting Self-discovery. Satsang generally takes place twice each day and in this auspicious time Mooji guides, challenges and responds to questioners with wisdom, love, humour and searing honesty. This powerful communication underpins the silence that is maintained throughout the 7 days. The quietude takes you deeper into what is being pointed and is an essential part of the retreat.

Through Mooji’s presence and direct pointings to Truth, the unfading love, joy and peace that so many are searching for are revealed to be our very nature and Self. Participating in a Silent Retreat with Mooji is a compelling invitation to all who are called to discovering this timeless Truth. Welcome!

Guidelines

This Silent Retreat with Mooji is for those who are genuinely drawn to Self-discovery. This environment is not for the merely curious, but for those who are clear in their heart that they have an urge to go deeper through the pointings of Moojibaba.

While it is beneficial to have attended a retreat before, the most important prerequisite is a sincere and wholehearted commitment to Self-discovery.

Each participant is required to abide by the following guidelines which are in place to facilitate your awakening. By attending this event you agree to:

  • Approach the retreat with the understanding that it is not a casual event—it is for those earnestly seeking Self-realisation in this life.`

  • Complete the entire retreat and to attend each and every Satsang session without exception. We also ask everyone to remain in the hall until Moojibaba has left the room.

  • Respect and abide by the code of silence for the full duration of the retreat.

  • Move quietly with your attention resting in silent awareness. To ensure that that attention is not pulled outward, there is strictly no socialising, no physical or eye contact, talking, singing, dancing, reading, writing or use of phones, cameras, other mobile devices, or the internet during the retreat. This greatly supports you making the most of your opportunity and also honouring the retreat of other participants.

  • If you are attending the retreat with a partner or friend, you agree to not communicate with each other during the retreat in any way. Please respect the Satsang of your loved ones and other retreat participants.

  • Present questions to Mooji in a simple, open and honest way. Avoid sharing personal stories, but come as though this is your only opportunity for freedom. Please understand and respect that it is only during Satsang that Mooji invites questions—he will not receive questions afterwards.

  • Refrain from using intoxicants or recreational drugs for the duration of the retreat.

  • Wear modest clothing throughout the retreat, avoiding tight, revealing or transparent clothes.

  • Silent Retreats are not a replacement for any therapy or other medical treatment or diagnosis. If you are currently receiving or have previously received any medical treatment or therapy for issues related to mental health, this retreat may not be suitable for you. Therefore, for those with a history of serious mental health conditions, it is not advisable to attend this retreat without ensuring it is reasonably safe to do so. Please check with a specialist healthcare practitioner whether attending the retreat is suitable for you at this time. More information can be found here.

  • You agree to have your image and voice recorded and possibly used for the sharing of Satsang on DVD, mp3 and on the Internet. All recorded material will be used to serve Satsang only. Images of all individuals will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and respect.

  • It is essential that those who intend to join this retreat watch these important videos:

Languages

Live translation in PortugueseFrenchItalianSpanish and Russian will be available both at the event and for online participants, and is lovingly offered by a team of devoted, non-professional interpreters. It is very helpful for some participants to listen to Satsang in their native language, however please be aware that there is always the possibility that some of Mooji’s words or meaning is missing or not translated perfectly. Naturally, Mooji’s own, unfiltered words are the highest and most powerful transmission, but many have benefited deeply from listening to the live translation.

Please note that live translation is offered only for Satsang. All other communication and written information, such as the schedule, registration, travelling and so forth, will be available only in English.

Requirements:
Smartphone or tablet
Compatible headphones
Installation of VLC player App for Android or iOS

Please ensure you tick the appropriate box when you register to request translation into Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish or Russian and you will receive information about the translation service by email.

There are no dialogues in the world. It is all a divine monologue. For in reality there are not two. There is only the single reality in its appearance as many. ~ Mooji

Ways to Join

There are two ways to participate in the Silent Retreat. You can come to Zmar to be in Mooji’s physical presence, or you can join the Live Internet Broadcast through Mooji TV.

Attending physically at Zmar
Being in the physical presence of a living Master and fully immersing yourself in the energy field of Satsang is a rare and blessed opportunity. Mooji’s loving and unfathomable presence itself can trigger transformation in one who is ripe for awakening. Please be aware that places are limited so registering in advance is essential. Pricing and registration info is below. Please read the Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions (including Cancellation policy) carefully.

Watching online via Live Internet Broadcast
If you are unable to attend physically at Zmar, joining via Live Internet Broadcast is an excellent alternative. You will have access to the daily Satsangs in real-time, as well as to any additional scheduled events such as Bhajans. For Mooji there is no separation, no distance to those joining online and he sees absolutely no hindrance or disadvantage in attending in this way. More information and registration is available on Mooji TV.

Regardless whether you attend in person or online, a Silent Retreat is more than just the scheduled events, and it is essential to follow the Guidelines. This might be more of a challenge for those following online who may still need to engage in some daily activities. If this is the case, it is highly recommended that you arrange plenty of quiet, contemplative time and space for yourself. The time you spend prior to and after Satsang is of utmost importance to allow the pointings to settle deeply inside your heart.

Camping in Your Own Tent
For this option you need to bring and pitch your own tent. Important! Camping in Portugal at this time of year can be a challenge. The weather can be hot in the day and cold at night, and it may also be quite windy and rainy. We would not recommend this option unless you are an experienced camper and comfortable in these weather conditions.

Camping Kit
While you must bring and pitch your own tent, you can hire a Camping Kit (€40). This includes a mattress, sleeping-bag, pillow and blanket. Camping Kit availability is limited and they need to be booked when registering by selecting Accommodation Type H "Bring your own tent & hire a camping kit." Please note that it is not possible to hire a camping kit in Zmar itself.

Food
The retreat fee includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea & coffee around meal times. Most meals are vegetarian throughout the retreat. Fish may be offered for lunch on some days. Upon registration, you can choose whether you need a gluten free or dairy free diet. Please note that these are the only special diet options that can be offered for this retreat.

FAQ

The Retreat

Is this a residential program? Do you provide accommodation and meals?

Those who choose the option to attend physically in Zmar will be able to select from a variety of housing options. These range from tents to private rooms. Please see the Accommodation section for more info. Meals are included in this price.

What is the difference between a Silent Retreat and a Satsang Intensive?

Silent Retreat is a residential retreat of 7 days with participants eating, sleeping and attending Satsang on site. Silence is maintained throughout the duration of the retreat. Daily activities such as work, reading, dancing, writing etc. are suspended to focus the attention inward. In the shorter Satsang Intensives, participants arrange their own food and accommodation. Silence is maintained in and around the Satsang venue and is recommended for the duration of the Intensive, but there is the possibility to continue with daily activities if needed.

Why is the retreat silent?

The maintaining of silence throughout the seven days supports your immersion in the Truth by keeping the attention focused inward.

Can I read or write during the retreat?

We ask you to please refrain from reading, writing, using the internet, drawing, singing or any form of the expressive arts. In other words, drop all outer activities for the duration of the retreat. Moojibaba encourages us to turn our attention inward and make use of the opportunity not to be distracted by any habitual activity. Books written by Mooji and any other books offered in the Sangha Shop are an exception, because they serve the same purpose as the retreat: to immerse us in the energy field of Truth.

Will I be able to use the internet during the retreat?

Zmar will not offer wifi or internet access during this retreat, and there are no internet facilities nearby. You are highly encouraged to not use the internet during the retreat and to switch off your mobile device. This is out of respect for your Satsang and for the Satsang of all the participants.

Will it book out quickly?

The venue can hold up to 900 people, but we do recommend people to book as soon as possible as we cannot anticipate how quickly the spaces will be filled.

I can’t sit on the floor. Can I sit on a chair?

Zmar has plenty of chairs with back support available.

Do you provide cushions to sit on the floor?

No, we advise to bring your own cushion if you wish to sit on the floor.

Accommodation & Food

Can I share my room with my partner or friend?

The rooms are allocated randomly and all shared houses are same gender only. It is not possible to request to share with a partner or friend. This retreat is a rare opportunity to move alone immersed in your own silence and we highly encourage couples to give each other the space to make the most of this opportunity. Remember, if you are attending the retreat with a partner or friend, you agree to not communicate with each other during the retreat in any way. Please respect the Satsang of your loved ones and other retreat participants.

How far are the accommodations from toilet facilities, the Satsang space or dining area?

Depending on the type of accommodation, some of the rooms are a 10-15 minute walk from the Satsang Hall and dining area. The terrain at Zmar is flat, and Zmar also offers bicycles for rent.

All houses have toilet facilities. In the camping area toilets are located up to 200m from the tent spots.

Do we have to bring our own bed linen and towels?

If you are staying in a house or shared room, Zmar will provide your bed linen and towels.

If you are camping, you must bring and pitch your own tent. You must also bring all your own bedding and camping gear, unless you pre-booked a Camping Kit  (€40) when registering. Even in this case, bring extra blankets to make sure you are warm enough at night.

Do you cater for special diets?

Most meals are vegetarian throughout the retreat. In addition, fish may be offered for lunch on some days. Upon registration, you can choose whether you need a gluten free or dairy free diet. Please note that these are the only special diet options that can be offered for this retreat.

If you cannot find the booking confirmation in your mailbox, please check your spam box. If you still see no confirmation please contact us.

What happens if my payment didn’t go through?

Attendance

I really want to attend the Silent Retreat, but I can’t arrive on the first day. Can I still come?

A friend who does not speak English wants to attend this event. Is this okay?

Yes, that is possible as long as they are familiar with the Guidelines, Privacy Policy, and Terms & Conditions and let us know beforehand that they will be attending. There will be live translation of all the Satsang sessions in Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian. No translations are offered in other languages during Satsang except where the questioner speaking with Mooji specifically asks for translation in a particular language and there is someone available to translate for them.

Can I bring my child to the retreat?

No, we cannot accommodate children at this retreat.

Can I bring a pet to the retreat?

No, it is not possible to bring any pets to the retreat.

Is Satsang a form of therapy or a replacement for medical treatment?

It is important to understand that Satsang is not a replacement for any therapy or other medical treatment or diagnosis. Satsang in the form of the Invitation and self-inquiry is a powerful aid to self-realisation, and while Mooji’s teachings are profound in guiding seekers of Truth to ultimate awakening, they are not meant as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Any change or discontinuation of therapeutic, psychological, psychiatric or other medical treatment should be undertaken with the supervision and guidance of a medical or other specialist mental health clinician.

Are you able to provide support for those who are not able to move independently, for example, due to physical disability or age?

No, unfortunately we are not able to provide such support at present.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Yes.

Is this Silent Retreat suitable for those with mental health or psychiatric disorders?

If you are currently receiving or have previously received any medical treatment or therapy for issues related to mental health, an environment of deep contemplation or introspection (such as Silent Retreat) may not be suitable for you. Please check with a medical or other mental health clinician whether attending a retreat, or participating online, is suitable for you at this time.

When and why might attending a Silent Retreat not be advisable?

Those experiencing psychiatric conditions, or other unusually strong emotional upheavals might not benefit from a concentrated Satsang environment like a Silent Retreat. Occasionally, being in such an environment can adversely affect pre-existing mental health conditions. It may bring up latent traumatic imprints or deep-rooted tendencies in the body-mind, which can trigger strong, seemingly overwhelming, thoughts, emotional responses and behaviour. Satsang may offer an opportunity to recognise, release and transcend these states. However, a participant with a mental health condition may feel overwhelmed by this, and so additional medical and psychiatric support may be required. Please be aware that we are not able to provide this type of support or expertise.

The questionnaire below is offered to provide more information.

Self-questionnaire

Please note that this is intended as a guide only, and does not constitute or replace medical or psychiatric advice. If the answer to any of the questions is ‘yes’ please be aware that a Silent Retreat may not be appropriate for you at this time.

  • Have you ever or are you currently suffering from and/or receiving treatment for any of the following conditions: Anxiety disorders (which includes generalised anxiety, agoraphobia and panic disorder), mood disorders (which includes clinical depression, mania and bipolar disorder), obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), personality disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis (on its own or as part of another condition)?
  • Are you currently taking any prescribed or non-prescribed medication for the treatment of a mental health condition?
  • Have you used any psychotropic (mind altering) non-prescription drugs for recreational, spiritual or self-medicating purposes within the past 6 months?
  • Do you currently have any substance use disorders (this includes harmful use, dependence and addiction) or have you undertaken a detoxification from substance use within the past 12 months?
  • Have you experienced any aggravation or deterioration of your mental health during the past 12 months irrespective of whether you have sought specialist advice for it or not?
  • Have you ever experienced any unpleasant or unwanted effects (these can include physical, cognitive, emotional or ‘energetic’) that have persisted beyond the duration of your participation in a spiritual practice or retreat, which may have interfered in your wellbeing and/or functional abilities?

Answering ‘yes’ to any of the questions does not categorically mean you cannot attend a Silent Retreat program. It requires you to seek specialist advice and receive confirmation from a medical or other professionally registered clinical specialist that your attendance is unlikely to adversely affect your health condition. Please be aware that we are not able to provide medical or psychiatric support or expertise.

I have been advised not to attend, or can see from the questionnaire that this is not the right time for me to participate in a Silent Retreat. Does this mean Satsang is not for me?

Satsang with Mooji works in many subtle ways and the benefit can be felt even if you are not able to be in a concentrated Satsang environment (such as a Silent Retreat) for the time being. Experiencing a mental health or psychiatric condition is not something that excludes anyone from deepening in their Satsang or fully realising their true nature. However, proper medical guidance and treatment as necessary is still very important. The two can support each other.

Can Satsang be a cause of mental health imbalance?

Satsang does not cause mental health or psychiatric disorders. Occasionally, Satsang may bring up latent traumatic imprints or deep-rooted tendencies in the body-mind, which can trigger strong, seemingly overwhelming, thoughts and emotional responses and behaviour. Satsang may offer an opportunity to recognise, release and transcend these states. However, if there is a mental health condition, a participant may feel overwhelmed by the arising of hidden tendencies, and so additional medical and psychiatric support may be required. Please be aware that we are not able to provide this type of support or expertise. Please refer to the questionnaire above for more information.
