Satsang
What is Satsang?
Satsang means ‘association with the highest Truth’ and refers to a gathering of people who are searching for who or what they truly are at the deepest level. Satsang often takes place in the presence of an awakened teacher or master. Seekers will ask questions and the master will respond to clear up any doubts, misunderstandings or apparent obstacles. Satsang, Self-inquiry, ‘the Just Be Exercise’ and ‘An Invitation to Freedom’ are all powerful aids to discovering your true nature and timeless freedom. A lasting discovery of Truth is often referred to as self-realisation, enlightenment or awakening.
More information can be found on the Satsang page.
What is the difference between a Satsang Intensive and a Silent Retreat?
A Satsang Intensive differs from a Silent Retreat in that participants arrange their own food and accommodation. In a Satsang Intensive, silence is maintained in and around the Satsang venue, and recommended for the duration of the retreat, but there is also the possibility to continue with daily activities if needed.
Joining the Intensive Physically in Lisbon
Will this intensive be booked up quickly?
The venue can hold up to 1500 people, but we do recommend people to book as soon as possible as we cannot anticipate how quickly the spaces will fill up.
Is it possible to buy a single day ticket?
No, this intensive is only available as the full 5-day event, and single day tickets are not available.
Do you know of any accommodation in the area? What is the closest area to the venue?
You will find a range of housing options suitable for all kinds of budgets around the venue area. We have provided some hotels in Lisbon which are offering special rates for this intensive, or whose rates are already low. Note we don’t have so much experience with these particular accommodations, so it is important that you do your own research to decide what is best for you. They’re each different in terms of comfort, cost, distance from venue etc. You can view these options here.
Booking sites such as airbnb.com and booking.com also offer many possibilities. There is a range of housing options for all kinds of budgets in the neighbourhoods near to the venue, such as Campo Grande, Alvalade, Palma de Baixo. In addition, most other areas of Lisbon are accessible by public transit within 20-30 minutes.
Do I need a visa to come to Portugal?
For some countries a visa is required before entering Europe. You will need to check with the Embassy or a travel agency in your own country about the necessary visa requirements before your departure dates. This information is also easily found on the Internet (http://www.schengenvisainfo.com/who-needs-schengen-visa/). Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your trip or you may not be allowed to travel.
Can I bring my child to satsang?
We find that in person satsang events like Retreats and Intensives are generally not suitable for children. The retreat environment offers a time for deep introspection and quietude, and children often get restless or need attention in some way. For most children, sitting for 1.5-2 hours in silence without becoming distracted is not easy.
We have seen over the years that bringing children along very rarely works well for the parents, the children, or the other participants in satsang.
As this is a non-residential event, it is better to arrange someone to take care of your child during satsang.
Are you able to provide support for those who are not able to move independently, for example, due to physical disability or age?
No, unfortunately we are not able to provide such support at present.
Is the venue wheelchair accessible?
Yes
Will it be possible to visit Monte Sahaja after the intensive?
Though we appreciate the wish to do this, it will not be possible to visit Monte Sahaja after the intensive. Moojibaba and the team’s energy and focus are fully dedicated to the event in Lisbon, and the period following the intensive is a time for rest, when Moojibaba will not be available.
This is also an important time for quiet reflection and assimilation of all that was offered. We have found that when Moojibaba makes himself available ongoingly, there is a strong tendency to ‘want more’ and the attention goes outward, instead of inward where it belongs after a retreat with Moojibaba.
The best time to visit Monte Sahaja is during a guest stay, which we have from time to time. When a new guest stay is scheduled, an update will be shared on our Monte Sahaja page.
Will the Intensive be offered online via Live Broadcast?
At the moment there is no plan to offer online broadcast for this event. If we do, we will send an email to our News & schedule mailing list which you can sign up for below.
Joining the Intensive Online via Live Broadcast
How do I watch live?
At satsang time, go to the top of this page, which is the Event Homepage, and the broadcast should start automatically at the scheduled time. If it does not, you may need to refresh the page.
If at any time you do not see the live player at the top of the page, you can get to the Retreat Homepage by clicking ‘Attend’ or ‘Log In’ at the top right of the page.
If you do not see either ‘Attend’ or ‘Log In’, then you may be logged into our website with a different email address than the one you registered with. In this case, go to ‘My Account’ (by clicking the circle at the very top right) and log in with the same email address you used to register for the retreat.
If you are not logged in, just click log in and enter your Mooji.org account details. The broadcast will start automatically on the video player at the top of the page. If it does not, you may need to refresh the page.
Usually broadcasts begin 5-15 minutes before scheduled time. If the satsang doesn’t start on schedule, please refresh the page. If it is still not there, please double check the Schedule page and make sure you are tuning in at the correct time based on your time zone.
If you have any issues, please check the FAQ and if you still need help contact us here.
Is this intensive offered via Zoom?
No, this intensive is only offered online through live broadcast, and is non-interactive.
Can I ask Mooji a question?
Moojibaba will take questions, reports and testimonies from those attending the intensive physically in Lisbon. It is not possible for those online to ask questions.
I cannot be fully in a retreat environment at home, eg. due to work or parental responsibilities. Is it still worth joining?
The most important requirement is a sincere and wholehearted commitment to self-discovery. While it is recommended to have plenty of time for contemplation, and a calm and peaceful space to join the retreat, it is still possible to benefit greatly from the retreat in other circumstances. Our suggestion would be to be as present as possible during the satsangs (live or recorded), and to avoid any unnecessary additional activities other than what is required of you.

Physical and Mental Well-Being
Is Satsang a form of therapy or a replacement for medical treatment?
Satsang is not a form of therapy and should not be used as a replacement for medical treatment. Mooji’s teachings are most profound in guiding seekers of Truth to ultimate awakening. However, his pointings and teachings are not meant as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Any change or discontinuation of therapeutic psychological, psychiatric or other medical treatment should be undertaken with the supervision and guidance of a medical or professional mental health clinician.
Is this Satsang Intensive suitable for those with mental health or psychiatric disorders?
If you are currently receiving psychotherapy, psychiatric care, or other treatment related to mental health, it is important that you discuss any potential risks and obtain clearance from your treatment provider before participating. In cases of prior significant mental health conditions, participation should likewise be considered only with appropriate professional guidance, and supervision where necessary.
When might attending a Satsang Intensive not be advisable?
Those experiencing psychiatric conditions, mental health conditions, or other unusually strong emotional upheavals might not benefit from a Satsang Intensive, and occasionally, it could adversely affect pre-existing conditions. The questionnaire below may help you decide whether you are in a position to benefit fully from a Satsang Intensive.
Self-questionnaire
Please note that this is intended as a guide only, and does not constitute or replace medical or psychiatric advice. If the answer to any of the questions is ‘yes’ please be aware that a Satsang Intensive may not be appropriate for you at this time.
- Have you ever or are you currently suffering from and/or receiving treatment for any of the following conditions: Anxiety disorders (which includes generalised anxiety, agoraphobia and panic disorder), mood disorders (which includes clinical depression, mania and bipolar disorder), obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), personality disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis (on its own or as part of another condition)?
- Are you currently taking any prescribed or non-prescribed medication for the treatment of a mental health condition?
- Have you used any psychotropic (mind altering) non-prescription drugs for recreational, spiritual or self-medicating purposes within the past 6 months?
- Do you currently have any substance use disorders (this includes harmful use, dependence and addiction) or have you undertaken a detoxification from substance use within the past 12 months?
- Have you experienced any aggravation or deterioration of your mental health during the past 12 months irrespective of whether you have sought specialist advice for it or not?
- Have you ever experienced any unpleasant or unwanted effects (these can include physical, cognitive, emotional or ‘energetic’) that have persisted beyond the duration of your participation in a spiritual practice or retreat, which may have interfered in your wellbeing and/or functional abilities?
- Have you ever had thoughts of suicide or attempted to take your own life?
Answering ‘yes’ to any of the questions does not categorically mean you cannot attend a Satsang Intensive program. It requires you to seek specialist advice and receive confirmation from a medical or other professionally registered clinical specialist that your attendance is unlikely to adversely affect your health condition. Please be aware that we are not able to provide medical or psychiatric support or expertise.
I have been advised not to attend, or can see from the questionnaire that this is not the right time for me to participate. Does this mean Satsang is not for me?
Being in Satsang with Mooji does not mean that you have to be physically present or attend a retreat or intensive. Satsang works in many subtle ways. Experiencing a mental health or psychiatric condition is not something that excludes anyone from deepening in their satsang or fully realising their true nature. However, proper medical guidance and treatment as necessary is still very important. The two can support each other.
Can Satsang be a cause of mental health imbalance?
Satsang does not cause mental health or psychiatric disorders. Occasionally, Satsang may bring up latent traumatic imprints or deep-rooted tendencies in the body-mind, which can trigger strong, seemingly overwhelming, thoughts and emotional responses. Satsang offers an opportunity to recognise, release and transcend these states. However, if there is a mental health condition, a participant may feel overwhelmed by the arising of their own hidden tendencies, and feel unable to control these projections or energies, and so additional medical and psychiatric support may be required. Please refer to the questionnaire above for more information.
